Subject: Special Pricing at today's seminar in Troy for MI Lease Drafting Book...
Hello,
A registrant from Toy just called me with the following concern/issue pertaining to a special sale price advertised for a book, directed specifically to people attending today's class in Toy.
As per my conversation with the registrant, a customer that she dealt with this morning "received" a marketing piece via mail that stated that this particular book, if purchased at today's class in Toy, would be on sale for $62.50.
The problem: A customer came to the registrant this morning wanting to purchase this title. She had brought a company check with her for exactly $62.50. She believed/ read this to be the "out the door" price, for lack of a better description... we at ICE all KNOW that advertised sale prices don't ever include tax or shipping, however, apparently this woman didn't get that point...which is fine, however, the registrant wanted to let Customer Service know why this sale is going to come back short of... $3.75 for tax... shipping is FREE for people purchasing books at classes. The registrant thinks, based on her conversation with this woman, that we might not want to "go after" the tax on this sale... because this customer was "confused" obviously...
This morning's situation then led me to thinking that actually, I've also experienced this issue on certain occasion with certain customers placing orders via mail. Should we possibly try and make special sale pricing clearer to our customers? Most customers get that sale prices don't include tax or shipping charges, however, there are definitely a handful of customers who don't... just something that I thought was notable to pass along. And also, this is explanation for why the registrant is telling us that this particular sale is short by tax... please feel free to see me if you have any further questions.
Thanks a lot,
CPC

People not paying tax and / or handling is an old and consistent problem. Order forms have been revised many times trying to make it clearer. I agree that printed matter in a situation like this might say "+ sales tax". We have the same problem with people looking at a screen on the web site but Denise says adding "+sales tax" won't work for reasons that are beyond my understanding.

This happens. I believe that whenever we advertise, we should include after the price in parentheses the words, plus tax, or, where applicable, plus tax and shipping. This is a problem that has been ongoing.

OH MY GAWD!! Why must I work with morons?!?! Is it because I can't tolerate them even slightly? God has punished me forever to walk amongst the very people that I can least understand.
Tell me, oh-so-wise viewer, does JC Penny put the disclaimer (+ sales tax) on every item in every flyer and commercial and billboard and sign in the store?? And to top it all off, we do put the tax disclaimer in the fine print along with on the orderform--the lady was just too thick to notice and didn't want to get in trouble. So she pushes the blame off on us!
I cannot fathom the comprehension of these people. They absolutely drive me insane. Now, I could understand if they were from, say, Minnesota where there is not sales tax. But they're from my state, and they study law for crying out loud.
"Oh, I didn't remember that I was supposed to figure in sales tax into the price of my purchase. Instead of me getting in trouble with my boss, how about I just throw a fit and you foot the bill? Cool?"
Bastards.
